Our Favorite Things Part 1; Kitchen Gadgets

When we started looking at blogs and experimenting with others’ recipes and our own, we found it helpful and interesting to see what other people use on a regular basis in their kitchens. Because of this, we thought it would be fun to do the same for you! When we started talking about how we should post about what we use (ingredients, gadgets…) we decided that we should probably do more than one post on it so that it doesn’t turn into a novel. So! Here is part one; Kitchen Gadgets.

[Note: These are just the appliances that we own, but it doesn’t necessarily make them the best option for you! There could be other versions out there that you may prefer, so see what you can find.]

Charissa won George (aka, a George Foreman Grill) at a nutrition club event during college but didn’t really start using him regularly until this past summer. We have created tons of paninis and ‘grilled’ veggies on it since then. Elysia had to buy her own when she moved back to school in order to support her growing addiction to all sandwich and other things grilled. For example, try our Maple PB Lavash, which was created on said panini press.

If you are looking for a panini press, we suggest buying one with removable plates (easier cleaning) and an adjustable heat setting.

Food Processor/Ninja

Used to make homemade nut butters, green smoothies, dips and spreads, banana ice cream……the list could go on and on! It’s so easy and quick to throw a bunch of ingredients together in a food processor or blender and let it do the magic for us. For instance, check out our Sprouted Buckwheat Dip, Blueberry Banana Ice Cream, and Savory but Sweet Potato ‘Casserole‘.

Coffee Grinder

AKA spice/grain grinder. Instead of using the coffee grinder for coffee beans, we use it to process smaller ingredients such as flaxseeds (did you know that your body can’t absorb their nutrients in their original ‘seed’ state?), oats, buckwheat, and whole spices.

Although a new tool to our kitchen, the spiralizer or ‘cook helper slicer’, can create raw pasta out of zucchini, create ribbons out of an apple, curly fries/hashbrowns out of a sweet potato and more.

Bamboo Steamer

We love steamed vegetables and a two-tier bamboo steamer can fit a lot in. If you don’t have a bamboo steamer you can always use a strainer/colander over a pot of water instead. If you want to steam miniature food items, you can use a smaller bamboo steamer like Elysia’s.

A Good Knife and Cutting Board

A must for chopping veggies quickly!

Kitchen Scale

While certainly not necessary, it is useful in baking for determining accurate flour amounts, or if you are dieting and want to determine caloric intake.

Stay tuned for Our Favorite Things Part 2; The Ingredients!

Also, we’re going to a vegan and gluten free cooking class tomorrow so we’ll be bringing you a recap (and hopefully inspiration) from that!

What is your favorite kitchen gadget?
